What is it like to live in Central MK?
Central Milton Keynes is the civic, commercial and cultural core of the city. Everything revolves around it — the theatre, the shopping centres, the railway station and Campbell Park. The grid road system means you can walk or cycle almost anywhere, and the Redway network fans out in every direction. It is young, busy and increasingly residential as developers convert former office blocks into apartments. Weekday mornings feel corporate and fast-paced; weekends fill with families, street food markets and festival crowds.
CMK has an urban, energetic feel unlike anywhere else in Milton Keynes. Apartment living dominates, and the population skews young and professional. The streets are wide, the architecture is modern, and there is a constant hum of activity — office workers by day, theatre-goers and diners by night. It feels like a small regional city rather than a suburb.
History of Central MK
Central Milton Keynes was planned from scratch in the late 1960s as the commercial and civic heart of the New Town. The grid road system, the linear parks and the shopping building (now centre:mk) were all part of the original masterplan. Over five decades CMK grew from open fields into a genuine city centre, with the theatre, stadium and station expansions anchoring its identity.
